Roadmap to Clean and Accessible Water and Improved Sanitation

Water is a precious resource, covering about 71% of our planet and playing a crucial role in sustaining life. It's integral to our bodies, necessary for hydration, and vital for clearing out substances we don't need. Not just humans, but all plants and animals rely on water for survival, emphasizing the urgency of ensuring that every person has access to clean water. As we look towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) by 2030, which aims to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, it becomes imperative to highlight the actions needed to make this a reality.

Wetlands, though often overlooked, are essential in the quest for clean water. Acting as natural sponges, they trap and slowly release surface water, rainwater, and underground water. This helps maintain a consistent flow in the water cycle, vital for water availability. Forests, too, play a significant role. They create microclimates, absorb CO2 emissions, and mitigate the effects of global warming and climate change, protecting our water sources from drying up.

Water scarcity leads to instability and conflict. In households, it can result in increased tension and gender-based violence as basic needs cannot be met. On a larger scale, reduced water availability impacts agricultural yields, leading to hunger, disease, and lower incomes. Inter-communal conflicts often arise as communities struggle to secure water for their needs.

Industrial activities pose a significant threat to our water sources. Many factories fail to adhere to environmental regulations, discharging untreated waste into rivers and streams. Businesses dealing with petroleum products must manage their waste to prevent soil and water contamination. Similarly, hotels near water bodies should ensure their waste is treated before disposal to prevent harm to downstream users.

Communities have a right to clean water must also stand up for their rights, recognizing their direct dependence on local water sources. This advocacy can pressure businesses and authorities to maintain water quality.

Civil society organizations play a crucial role in supporting communities. They can lead initiatives to plant trees, educate about the importance of clean water, and promote better water use practices. Trees help reduce desertification while restoring and protecting wetlands and peatlands ensuring sustainable water access. These efforts collectively enhance our environment and contribute to SDG 6.

Water harvesting is an effective strategy to conserve water during periods of heavy rainfall, reducing the impact of floods and ensuring water availability during dry seasons. Additionally, preventing waterborne diseases, particularly in children under five years, is a pressing concern. Protecting water bodies from contamination by livestock, household waste, and industrial pollutants is essential for public health.

Encouraging the reuse of water and recycling wastewater can significantly reduce water wastage. Simple practices, such as turning off taps after use, can make a substantial difference. Educating family members, neighbors, schoolmates, and the broader community about water conservation ensures a sustainable future for coming generations.

Achieving SDG 6 requires concerted efforts from individuals, communities, businesses, and governments. By protecting our water sources, managing waste effectively, and promoting water conservation, we can ensure the availability of clean water and sanitation for all.
